B&Q to use recycled glass to build ten new store car parks

The chain will be using RMC's coated macadam "glasphalt" in the construction of at least ten new store car parks in England and Wales over the next two years. The agreement follows successful trials using the recycled material at a B&Q store in Cardiff and a B&Q warehouse in Bristol.

Commenting on the agreement, RMC Surfacing northern area manager, Jeff Glasspoole, said: "We are hoping for at least £1 million of work during the next year as a result of this agreement. Each contract is set to use significant quantities of glass because each B&Q warehouse car park can cover an area up to 12,000 metres squared."

Recycled glass makes up about 30% of the glasphalt material, in place of primary aggregates. The material will be provided by compliance scheme Valpak through its subsidiary Valient Recycling Ltd.

Valpak operations director Steve Gough said: "We welcome this agreement between Valpak member B&Q and RMC. It is vital that we continue to support alternative markets for recycled glass, as well as support the container industry, in order to help the UK meet its challenging targets."

He added: "This agreement is a great example of how industry can work together to support developing end markets."
