Glass workers walk off the job
|
Glass manufacturer ACI has been hit by a 24-hour stoppage by hundreds of workers at its plants in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
The stoppage is in support of 76 workers at ACI's Box Hill plant in Melbourne, who have been locked out for more the two months.
The workers have rejected a management proposal which would allow them back at work if they agree to job losses and reduced employment conditions.
Mass meetings across the country today have voted for further industrial action, unless the Melbourne workers go back under pre-existing conditions.
The assistant national secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union, Glenn Thompson, says the stopwork is likely to affect the company.
"The blokes who have stopped work they do the maintenance on the running of these plants and that is line maintenance as well, if there is issues with those plants it will have an effect," he said.
The strike is not threatening production at this stage.
