Pilkington: Cleaning up at San Salvo

The 5S scheme has gained two more 'S's - Pilkington Automotive's San Salvo site launched the housekeeping programme across the plant in March.

The float plant, laminated and toughened areas and CRS general areas have all been divided into sections with a person assigned to oversee the project in each area. The Italian plant aims to have the first four 'S's - sort, straighten, shine and standardise - activated by the end of the year, with the fifth - sustain - to follow over time.

Meanwhile, the Cebrace plant in Brazil has shown steady improvement with its application of 5S and come through its second audit showing 85 per cent compliance, compared with 82 per cent at the first audit two months ago.

"Little by little, the awareness of both being prepared for an audit and keeping the standard reached is strengthening among the collaborators throughout the plant," said 5S auditor Adilson Cesar Fernandes Vargas.

"The levels of cleanliness, the maintenance and organization levels, as well as the work routines, generate a more pleasant and productive work environment, which is also noticeable to visitors."

The plant aims to achieve 3S certification by September of this year, and full 5S certification in 2004.
