PPG Coil and Extrusion Coatings Group Launches New Infrared Reflective Coatings

Date: 6 May 2003

The Coil and Extrusion Coatings Group of PPG Industries now offers a line of infrared reflective coatings that meet the ENERGY STAR requirements for roof products to reduce the amount of heat absorbed by a structure.

PPG's new Duranar SPF Coatings, being launched at the 2003 AIA National Convention in San Diego, are specially formulated using infrared reflective pigments to increase the reflectivity of medium to dark colors. Architects and designers can now specify PPG's reflective coatings for metal roofs without sacrificing color choices.

"Approximately 98-percent of our existing Duranar coating colors can be formulated with infrared pigments to meet the standards of Duranar SPF coatings," explained Keith Prins, General Manager - Industrial Finishes. "This creates nearly endless color possibilities for cool roof coatings. Architects are no longer limited to light colors when specifying a reflective roof coating."

The Duranar SPF Coatings, as well as many standard Duranar coating colors, meet the ENERGY STAR requirements to qualify as cool roof coatings and contribute to a building's LEED certification for energy efficiency.

"PPG has always supported environmentally friendly building and many of our existing colors already met the ENERGY STAR requirements without using IR pigments. The development of Duranar SPF coatings now allows us to offer reflective coatings in a much broader color range," Prins added.

Duranar SPF coatings help reduce the amount of heat absorbed into a structure, thereby lowering energy consumption and the cost of keeping a building cool. The reflective coatings also help to extend the life of a roof by reducing metal expansion/contraction caused by excessive heat.

As a supporter of energy reduction initiatives and environmentally friendly building, PPG is a member of the National Green Building Council and is applying for ENERGY STAR partner status and registration of Duranar SPF coatings as ENERGY STAR products.

Duranar high-performance coil coatings combine PPG proprietary resin and pigment technologies that are durability proven in more than 30 years of applications under the toughest environmental conditions. DURANAR coil coatings exceed the industry's toughest performance specifications. The coatings are chemically inert and provide resistance against color and gloss fade as well as environmental stress such as acid rain and UV exposure.
