Tyler's Glass Recreation Center wins architectural award

The City of Tyler and Fitzpatrick Butler Architects were honored by the American Institute of Architects Northeast Texas Chapter for the design of the Glass Recreation Center Thursday, December 5, at the Willowbrook Country Club, 3205 W. Erwin St.
Five awards were presented during this biannual awards presentation, including the Merritt of Honor Award for the Recreation Center. This award recognizes buildings that have proven to be highly functional as well as visually pleasing. Tyler City Councilman Derrick Choice accepted the award on behalf of the City, along with Mike Butler of Fitzpatrick Butler Architects. Fitzpatrick Butler Architects were also presented the Interiors Award for remodeling the Carpenter Francis Pharmacy Building at 1510 S. Vine Ave. into the company's offices.
Since its opening in Spring 2001, the city-owned and operated Glass Recreation Center has proven to be one of the most popular recreation spots in town. In the past 18 months membership at the center has jumped to more than 5,400 people. With 16,000 square feet, the center offers something for everyone. There is a large basketball/volleyball gym, track, fully equipped weight room and locker rooms. Aerobics, circuit training, karate and gymnastic classes are scheduled each week. There is also a computer laboratory, an art classroom and a multipurpose room that can be rented for family reunions, receptions and birthday parties. Outside, there are plenty of picnic areas.
