Corning® Gorilla® Glass Penetrates the Japanese Mobile Phone Market

CORNING, N.Y., March 03, 2010 – Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) announced today that Corning’s Gorilla® glass was selected as the protective cover glass for the docomo PRIME series™ N-02B by NEC. NEC, a mobile phone leader in the Japanese market, is offering this feature-rich touch phone with a 3.2-inch display.

“NEC was looking for a company that offered flexibility in supply and a product that would withstand their rigorous device-level stress tests,” said Osamu Ishihara, regional sales manager, Specialty Materials Division, Corning International K.K. “They were very pleased with the durability and scratch resistance of Gorilla glass and felt it would be ideal for the touch screen of their new NEC N-02B camera phone.”

In acknowledging NEC’s adoption of Gorilla glass, Clifford L. Hund, general manager and president, Corning East Asia, indicated that Corning is very pleased to work with NEC and expand its footprint into the Japanese mobile phone market. Corning’s Gorilla glass is currently on more than 70 devices and 17 major brands.

After undergoing a chemical strengthening process, Gorilla glass provides device manufacturers with a highly durable, scratch-resistant, liquid crystal display (LCD) cover. These features make Gorilla glass an ideal solution for personal electronic devices, such as mobile phones and notebook computers, and are especially valuable for products featuring touch-screen technologies.

Corning’s Gorilla glass is available in a variety of thicknesses, from 0.55 millimeters up to 2.0 millimeters, providing flexibility in device design as well as glass processing. It is an environmentally friendly aluminosilicate glass produced with Corning’s proprietary fusion draw process, which enables the production of uniform thin sheets with a pristine surface.
