Pilkington Aerospace has clinched a two year deal to retain supplier position for the US Army armoured HMMWV 'Humvee' programme .

All 3,000 armoured Humvees currently in service have been armoured with Pilkington bullet-resistant glazing (BRG) since the programme began in 1993, and demand for this special mission ground force vehicle is estimated to be at least 500 vehicles per year. The US Army is delighted with the BRG performance, particularly the special composition laminated windshield assembly, which incorporates the use of the Group's proprietary Pilkington OptiwhiteTM glass, allowing the crew to use night vision equipment. The windshield also incorporates an electric de-ice system to enhance visibility in adverse weather conditions.

Pilkington Aerospace's BRG performance captured global recognition when it was highlighted in Mark Bowden's best-selling book, and now hit movie, 'Black Hawk Down'. In the book, the author references the BRG's incredible resilience defeating AK-47 ammunition and even a direct hit from a rocket propelled grenade.

UK, US, NATO and other Allied forces are confident that their Humvees are protecting them with the finest quality transparent armour available.
