Tucked away in the cool climes of Antarctica, is ‘Bharati’ a Research Station commissioned by India with the focus on oceanographic studies and the phenomenon of continental break up.

Operational since 2012, it also facilitates research to refine the current understanding of the Indian subcontinent’s geological history.Bharati’s architecture mandated special glazing for cool climates, which was met by Saint-Gobain’s range of glass solutions.

Located in Larsemann Hills, the contract for Bharati has been overseen by the National Centre of Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR). The completion of Bharati saw India become one of only nine nations to have multiple stations within the Antarctic Circle. Saint-Gobain’s exclusive glazing for cool climates ensured that the research station benefited from the functional benefits of glass without compromising on the aesthetic value.

Triple glazing solutions with comfort glass enveloped the facades of Bharati. SGG Climatop and SGG Cool-LITE, ideally suited in glazing for cool climates, were the variants of glass used across the research station.

SGG Climatop is a crystal clear low-E glass that combines the best of thermal insulation properties & high solar factor. Especially dedicated to triple glazing units, this high-performance glass guarantees good solar gains with effective thermal insulation.

SGG Cool-LITE is an advanced energy-efficient solar control glass. An exterior glass, it is manufactured to meet the most exacting standards to deliver high performance with ease in processing. This reflective glass provides optimum light transmission, thus allowing natural daylight into the interiors and reducing glare. It also reduces the need for artificial lighting.

That Bharati Research Station is a beneficiary of Saint-Gobain’s years of research customizing solutions in the arena of glazing for cool climates stands testimony to the futuristic glass solutions that Saint-Gobain has on offer. Sitting “warm” with elegant aesthetics and functional benefits of glass, the research station is a proud epitome of Indian excellence.
