Glass Packaging Sales Up, Half of Czech Output Sold Abroad

Czech glass industry sales have been declining in recent years but the production of container glass has been growing by 4-6 percent annually over the same period, according to the Association of Glass and Ceramic Industries.

Glass packaging for the food industry is the most demanded, and 90 percent of the demand is satisfied by producers Vetropack Moravia Glass (VMG) and Avirunion, both owned by multinational concerns.Half of their output is exported.

Vetropack which belongs to Swiss group Vetropack Holding, posted sales of CZK 2.1 billion for 2005, up 11 percent from 2004, and the company turned out 800 million glass containers, and exported 42 percent of output.

Avirunion is a unit of US group Owens-Illinois and in 2005 generated 2.19 billion in sales. The company exports 52 percent of its output.
