A three-story glass conservatory will connect the east and west wings of the Galt House Hotel & Suites downtown. The $4 million structure will include a cafe, cocktail lounge, trees and foliage and an 18-foot-high aviary, according to the hotel's owners.

The 10,000-square-foot conservatory will overlook the Ohio River, said Mary Mosely, president of the Al J. Schneider Co., which owns the 1,300-room Galt House.

The conservatory will be open to the public as well as hotel guests. It will be built from a pedestrian walkway connecting the second floors of the Galt House and Galt House East on 4th Street.

Work is expected to start this fall and finish in mid-2004.
