The Italian energy corporation Enel SpA has announced to invest around €300 million ($428 million) in constructing PV systems and solar thermal power plants by 2011.

It has concrete plans for a total of 35 MW, including a ground-mounted PV system with 6 MW of power in Montalto di Castro and a 5 MW solar thermal power plant in Sicily, which is part of the so-called Archimedes project from Nobel prize winner Carlo Rubbia. In addition, 24 MW of PV systems will be installed on operational buildings of 1,200 transformer sub-stations belonging to Enel Distribuzione SpA. If the project stopped after installing the first 35 MW, this means that average costs will total €8,600 ($12,270) per kW – that‘s rather high for PV as well as for solar thermal plants.
