Students from 30 schools participated in the early rounds of the science contest, which challenged youngsters to design gadgets and models using DuPont products such as Corian© solid surface material, Lycra© brand elastane, Tynex© nylon filaments and Tyvek© nonwoven sheet structures. Six students were selected to compete in the competition finals, which were held at the National Science Center in Kuala Lumpur. More than 300 students, 200 teachers and others attended the event.
At the finals, Chief Minister of Selangor Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamad Khir Bin Toyo said: "The DuPont Science Challenge has proved that science and life cannot be separated. We, especially the teachers and parents, have come to realize the importance of science and that knowledge in the sciences must be instilled in our children from an early age."
A. Hapiz Abdullah, managing director of DuPont Malaysia, said the five-month project has helped the company establish a strong relationship with the community. "There were about 3,000 children and 300 adults involved in this program. All of them worked closely as a team, experiencing the dynamics of teamwork and open communication. Our employees are very proud to have contributed to building a strong relationship with the community."

DuPont Malaysia and the country's Ministry of Education recently sponsored the finals of the DuPont Science Challenge 2001, a competition for rural students in Selangor.
