DuPont Senior Vice President and Chief Science and Technology Officer Tom Connelly was on hand to present the award to Sim Wee Sun, who is a NUS assistant chemistry professor.
Winners of the DuPont Young Faculty Award - which honors scientists in the United States, Asia and Europe - receive a three-year USD 75,000 research grant. The purpose of the award is to help young faculty members who have potential, but may lack the reputation to obtain federal grants, launch their research careers.
Dr. Sim - who is among two Asian scientists selected this year for the award by the DuPont Fellows Forum -- plans to use his grant for research in nanoscience and molecular electronics. "All of my research training has prepared me for this exciting field," he said.
At the award ceremony, Tom said: "This is our first Young Faculty Award presented outside of the United States, and one of four that will be presented this year. It recognizes Dr. Sim's accomplishments and potential, and also the strong scientific capability within the National University of Singapore."
