Although Japan-based Asahi Glass recently announced it will close down a CRT glass production base in Taiwan, Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) said it expects the impact of the decision to be limited. Both Asahi Glass and Nippon Electric Glass (NEG) are major CRT glass suppliers of CPT, CPT said.

Since CPT still has sufficient material supply, Asahi's decision will not seriously impact its CRT business, the Taiwan-based company indicated, adding that the company shipped around two million CRTs in June, up 2.6% from 1.95 million units in May.

Asahi Glass announced yesterday that it has decided to reduce its CRT glass capacity by about 35% by stopping all operations in Taiwan (Pacific Glass, one panel production furnace) and Indonesia (P.T. Video Display Glass Indonesia, one funnel production furnace) and also by discontinuing production at four furnaces at other production bases.

The glass maker projects demand for CRT glass used in PCs and TVs will decline to about 200 million units this year, from around 264 million units in 2004, due to a rapid shift toward TFT LCDs, Asahi Glass said.

CRT TV shipments will account for 61% of the global market next year, down from 72% in 2006 and 82% in 2005, according to iSuppli. LCD TV shipments will surpass CRT TV shipments by 2009, iSuppli added.
