The liquid crystal display television wars are heating up and could provide new opportunities for Corning Inc. Reuters news agency reported from Tokyo that Sharp Corp. is making a move on its larger rivals, Sony Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co.

Ltd., by approving plans for a new $4 billion plant in western Japan.

The Nikkei Business Daily said Sharp would ask companies that make components for the flat-panel televisions to build their factories near the new Sharp plant to improve efficiency.

Which is where Corning Inc. comes into the equation.

The Twin Tiers' largest employer has a long-term relationship with Sharp and is one of the major suppliers of flat-panel glass for Sharp's televisions.

The Japanese business newspaper identified Corning Inc., Asahi Glass Co. Ltd., Toppan Printing Co. Ltd. and Dai Nippon Printing Co. Ltd. as companies that could be approached to become part of the new Sharp complex.
