Wires are no longer used in the windscreen. An extremely thin coating in the laminated glass offers protection against the sun in summer and can be heated in winter.
In the warm season, it ensures less warming-up of the interior, as a result of the extremely thin coating preventing 60% of the solar warmth entering. Only 40% of the warmth can enter the vehicle compared with the 65% of a conventional green glass glazing. Lower heating of the vehicle’s interior simultaneously improves the feeling of comfort. The direct solar radiation on the skin is greatly reduced. Behind the climate comfort windscreen, the surface of the instrument panel warms up approx. 15°C less. Besides the improvement in thermal comfort, the environment is also relieved because thanks to reduced heating-up, less power is required for cooling by the air-conditioner. As a result, the vehicle’s fuel consumption is also cut. The climate-comfort windscreen saves 1.6g/km of CO2.

As an option, the new VW Golf can be fitted with a year-round windscreen, which can be offered for the first time in its class. The new windscreen combines the advantages of the infra-red reflecting windscreen with those of wire heating to produce a “climate-comfort windscreen”.
