"As the use of glass in commercial and residential buildings is growing very rapidly, there is an urgent need for standards for selection and installation of glass to ensure human safety," Confederation of Construction Products and Services (CCPS) head Deepak Gahlowt said here.
These guidelines, once implemented, would facilitate the enforcement of safety standards through improved building by-laws by local municipal bodies, he said.
The proposed guidelines specify critical locations, types of glass and safety considerations in installation. It also describes various testing procedures to determine whether the safety specifications have been followed or not.
A steering committee consisting of representatives from Central Public Works Department (CPWD), National Building Construction Corporation Ltd (NBCC), various municipal bodies from the union and states, eminent architects, builders and glass makers was set up to prepare the final guidelines.
Besides, a standing working committee has also been set up to review the document twice every year and propose changes that may be required to keep the guidelines updated and relevant, Gahlowt said.
