EDMONTON — It may be just a coincidence, but The Glass Menagerie is opening tonight at The Citadel Theatre, the same day as its $6 million glass replacement project gets underway.
After years of annual caulking repairs that never solved serious roof leaks, all the panels plus the oak and glass doors will be replaced in sections over the next eight months. “It will be top to bottom, starting with skylights.And we will not close during the work — we have plays to put on,” said executive director Penny Ritco.
Most of the glass is being offered to the public for $30 per panel. In fact, all 250 of the 5-by-9 and 5-by-12 foot glass panels which form a curtain wall at the front of the downtown landmark can be snapped up for a total of $10,000. The new high-tech glass panels will cost the theatre between $1,200 and $1,500 each.
