Led by major supplier Pilkington Automotive, the leading manufacturers of windscreen, rear screen and side window glass are launching what amounts to a "hallmark" scheme to identify exactly what properties are built into their products in different makes and models of car.

The information is presented via a series of small pictures on the glass itself, all referred to in the owner's manual.Renault and Volvo are already using the system.

These days, of course, glass does rather more than keep the wind and weather out of a car's passenger cabin. It may include heating elements, solar protection and/or noise-reducing material, as well as built-in antennae for radios and mobile phones.

And there's increasing use of laminated glass for the side windows, offering better protection against a break-in than toughened glass. UK car insurers don't give a car a five-star security rating unless laminated glass is fitted in those windows; so there's a financial benefit to bear in mind.
