The move to create a national association for the glass, architectural metal and autoglass industries began in July 2001 when representatives from nine provincial associations met to discuss the feasibility of uniting these under one banner on a national level.They have been prompted by the issues and challenges that all of them face in each province such as safety and training, standardized glazing practices, uniform standards for material, compulsory certification for the glazing trades, skilled labor shortage and government sponsored apprenticeship training facilities. Now that the initial work of organizing the association has been completed the board of executives will turn its attention to tackling these issues.
The president elect for this new association is Keith Pynoo of Kawneer Canada in Calgary, Alberta. First vice-president is Dieter Ringler, president of the Ontario Glass and Metal Association, (OGMA), and the second vice-president is Dave Husson, president of the Glass Contractors Association of British Columbia.

The final chapter of the long struggle to form a national glass association for Canada has been written as the Canadian Glass Association (CGA) was officially inaugurated in December.
