Created to recognize future leaders in optical communications, the Corning award will rank student papers based on innovation, research excellence and author presentation skills. Students interested in submitting a paper to the competition should visit www.ofcnfoec.org and follow the steps for the regular submission process, making sure to denote that they are submitting their paper for the competition. Papers submitted to the competition will be reviewed and scored by the OFC/NFOEC technical program committee according to standard review criteria.
To be eligible for the competition, the author must be an undergraduate or graduate student devoting at least 50 percent of his or her time to studies in an academic environment. Additionally, the student must be the primary author on the paper and be the one to give the oral presentation at OFC/NFOEC.
The 10 to 12 papers receiving the highest scores in first-round review will be considered finalists for the onsite component of the competition. Finalists will be asked to submit supplemental information approximately one month prior to the conference. These additional requirements will include the lead author's curriculum vitae, two letters of reference, as well as formal proof of student status. These materials, coupled with a review of the finalists' oral presentations at the meeting, will be used to select the grand-prize winner and the two honorable mention recipients.
The awards will be presented during the post-deadline paper session at OFC/NFOEC 2008 on Thursday, Feb. 28. The grand-prize winner will receive $1,500; papers of honorable mention will receive $1,000 each.
Call For Papers Opens For Corning Outstanding Student Paper Award competition
The Corning Outstanding Student Paper Award competition today launched its call for papers. In its inaugural year, this award competition from Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW), made possible through an endowment to the OSA Foundation, will debut at the 2008 Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) in San Diego, Calif.
