Bodycote International plc announces the acquisition from Surface Engineered Products, Edmonton, Canada, of the intellectual property rights, patents, trade marks and equipment of CoatAlloy™.

CoatAlloy™ is a protective coating for use in high temperature applications, where there is a need to extend the life of process plant. It enables the coating of the surfaces of complex shapes, such as tubes and fittings, to seal the surface and protect against unwanted chemical reactions.

Equipment is being transferred from Canada to the currently vacant Bodycote Metallurgical Coatings location at Knowsley, Liverpool (UK). The new facility will be a completely re-equipped technologically advanced coatings centre and up to twelve new jobs will be created when the facility opens at the end of the year.

CoatAlloy™ is a three-part surface engineering system that is in total 300-400 microns thick. The layer closest to the base material acts as a diffusion barrier with the middle layer acting as an enrichment pool providing ‘self-healing’ properties to the outer layer which has anti-coking properties. The CoatAlloy™ 1100 process has already proved itself in the ethylene industry by considerably reducing coking in furnace tubes thereby improving production yields and run times.

The technology has pronounced synergy with Bodycote K-Tech’s ceramic coatings businesses, extending the market, in particular, in oil, gas and petrochemical applications. Other developing markets such as power generation and the process transportation of solids and slurries, offer the promise of significant market growth for this highly beneficial technology.

Bodycote International plc, the metallurgical services group, has more than 240 facilities in 21 countries. The group’s four strategic business units provide heat treatments, hot isostatic pressing, materials testing and metallurgical coatings to a wide range of industries including automotive, aerospace, power generation, oil and gas, military, petrochemical, agricultural and consumer product.
