Blue Planet Prize Winners Announced

Dr. Akira Miyawaki of Japan and Dr. Emil Salim of Indonesia Thursday won the 2006 Blue Planet Prize. The Asahi Glass Foundation of Japan, which established the Blue Planet Prize in 1992, recognizes two individuals and/or organizations annually for contributions to resolve global environmental problems.

Each prize recipient receives $430,000.

Miyawaki, professor emeritus at Yokohama National University, established a theory to restore and to reconstruct forests based on the concept of "potential natural vegetation." Miyawaki restored an forest in Japan and reconstructed tropical rain forests overseas.

Salim, professor of economics at the University of Indonesia, helped establish the concept of sustainable development. Salim dedicated his efforts to establishing environmental governance in Indonesia as the environment minister for 15 years.
