It's 50 years old, started with 15 people and grew over time to its peak size of about 22,000 in a world-wide business of building doors and windows for homes. It's been estimated that its workforce has been cut by about 25 percent since the recession began.
The privately-held business diversified under founder Dick Wendt and his son, Rod Wendt, into such areas as recreation subdivisions, financial services and acquired other companies related to home building. There's good reason to think it still has the long-term in mind even as the Wendt family relinquishes majority ownership to Onex Corp., a Canada-based asset management firm.
