Following the tragic accident at the ATOFINA Chemicals, Inc. Riverview, Michigan plant on July 14, 2001, it became evident that a coordinated emergency warning system is needed in this community.

ATOFINA Plant Manager, Joe Alli, took the initiative to call together a task force comprised of officials from six communities and three industrial facilities to work on this problem.

"It was a hopeful meeting," said Alli when asked about the first meeting of the group. "We broke the ice and started talking about what the needs of the community are. Everybody agreed we need to do something relatively soon."

The next meeting is planned for October 3rd. Officials from Riverview, Grosse Ile, Wyandotte, Southgate and Brownstown Township are participating in the task force along with representatives from BASF Corp in Wyandotte, Solutia, Inc. in Trenton and ATOFINA in Riverview.
