Asahi India plans third glass plant in Chennai

Leading automotive safety glass manufacturer Asahi India Glass Ltd is planning to set up a third plant in Chennai at an estimated cost of Rs.500 million.

The new plant will have an initial capacity to make over 500,000 laminated windshields annually, the company said in a statement Friday.Together with its automotive glass plant at Rewari in Haryana and float glass plant at Taloja in Maharashtra, the company's capacity to manufacture laminated windshields will rise to over 1.7 million when the third unit is commissioned in October 2004.At the Rewari facility, the company also makes 1.2 million car sets of tempered glass.A joint venture of the Labroo family, Asahi Glass Co Ltd of Japan and Maruti Udyog Ltd, Asahi India is targeting existing customers in south India like Hyundai Motors, Toyota Kirloskar, Ford India, Hindustan Motors, Volvo India and others."The company will be seeking to address some export markets using the new facility," the statement said.
