Artist sheds light to reveal the alchemy of glass color, textureA passion for glass and color, nurtured from childhood, has evolved into a successful art glass lighting studio for Giuliana Dalsgaard of Novato.

Dalsgaard, a former graphic artist who found her medium - fused glass - opened her studio, La Stella Lighting in Bel Marin Keys, only a month ago.But since then, she said, “We've been getting calls daily.”It's no wonder. Not only are the works she produces rich in color and texture, many are also large and dramatic, designed to appeal to architects and designers outfitting commercial spaces or magnificent, and modern, cutting-edge homes.

Chandeliers and sconces are produced in brilliant hues. With “Meadow,” hundreds of blade-like pieces of glass in greens and golden browns circle a white globe. The glass blades are drawn into sheaves bound with fine brass “cord” and decorated with brass dragonflies.

Another beauty, “Tranquil Waters,” is almost Scandinavian in its simplicity, with waves of glass in blues and greens.

Dalsgaard, who is the business's president and creative director, also has the good fortune to be entering a market that's looking at chandeliers and other lighting fixtures in a new light - as awe-inspiring showpieces. Only last week, the San Francisco Chronicle Home section featured a range of magnificent chandeliers.

Dalsgaard refers to her labor-intensive, jewel-like pieces as “gems.” They are.

Her passion began at an early age.
