The Argentine government Tuesday launched a 180-day ban on glass exports in a bid to hold down domestic prices, repeating a move used previously with beef exports.
Argentine glass exports, in tonnage terms, rose by 85% year-on-year during the first half of 2006, leading to higher domestic prices, the government said in a resolution published a day earlier.
"It seems the government is trying to repeat the same strategy it used with the beef sector earlier, whereby the export ban was used to pressure producers into lowering domestic prices," Credit Suisse said in a report Tuesday.
