The Bank of China Tower
The Bank of China Tower is one of the most imposing buildings on the island of Hong Kong. Owned by the People's Republic of China, this magnificent structure symbolizes the wealth and power of this former British colony.
The Bank of China Tower was designed by the Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei, and was built between 1985 and 1990. With its 70 stories and height of 369 metres, it is one of the tallest buildings in the world. During the planning stages, Pei wanted to create a structure which would represent Chinese culture and at the same time serve as an act of good will for the inhabitants of the British colony. Originally he had planned a cross-brace x-shape for the structure. Given that in China "x" traditionally represents death, Pei decided to remove the controversial x-shaped form and replaced it with the diamond forms that can be seen on the building today.
