The World Trade Center - New York

The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, which dominated the Lower Manhattan skyline, were destroyed by two hijacked passenger planes.

?The Twins?, as the WTC towers were referred to by New Yorkers, were designed by the Japanese architect Minoru Yamasaki, and were finished in the 1973. Construction costs for this giant structure, ?the symbol of western capitalism?, were approximately 400 milion dollars. With a height of 415 meters and a weight of 600.000 tons, the WTC was the tallest building constructed at that time. More than 43.000 windows (approximately 600.000 sq feet of glass) were used to cover the structure. The metal-mesh skin of the building supported a substantial share of the load, and was specially designed to withstand enormous wind and settlement pressures. The Twin Towers housed the offices of more than 430 companies from 26 countries. More than 50,000 people worked in the complex that was home to stores, restaurants, international businesses and hotels. Tens of thousands more people visited the complex every day. Additional information on this terrorist act and building features are available on the selected links.
