The National Grand Theatre

Many People were startled by the appearance of the Sydney Opera House when they first saw it, but this masterpiece, designed by the Danish architect Jorn Utzon, become an icon in the history of modern world architecture. Now, the French architect Paul Andreu has created another phenomena in China.

As China?s all-time greatest investment in theatre so far, the controversy around the National Grand Theatre has never relaxed since it was started in June 1st, 2001. Formerly, many famous Chinese academics were jointly opposed this project, calling it an ?unscientific design?. But Andreu?s blue print was finally accepted after some modification.

Many Chinese people call this ellipse-shaped architecture the ?boiled egg? (a common breakfast food in China). This theatre is located to the west of the Great Hall of the People. With a total area of 118,900 square meters and a building area of 149,500 square meters, the total investment for this project will be as much as 26.88 billion RMB.
