Hurricane-Resistant Windows
The laminated glass, framing system and sealant are the key components in hurricane-resistant windows, as they must resist together both the structural and impact loads.
Laminated glass, which consists of two layers of glass with a special plastic sheet or film in the middle, stays in one piece, even when shattered. A strong interlayer does not always prevent glass breakage, but it can prevent further damage: if an opening is penetrated by flying debris, the highly pressurized air can blow off the roof and cause the collapse of the building. It is very important to choose the appropriate interlayer, which should vary according to the glass size and window type. Hurricane-resistant windows must pass hard tests, like the large and small missile impact tests, during which the glass has to survive a missile impact.
