Added weight to building case studies and processing ideas - A special architectural contribution from the AIA/CES
Arrangements have been made for participating architects to qualify for continuing professional education AIA/CES credits from attending GPD lectures fulfilling the specific requirements of the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Guidelines The program includes a special presentation by Mr Thomas Lowther, Director of the American Institute of Architects/CES entitled Trends of Marketing Opportunities through Professional Development.
A special form for AIA members will be made available for completion and submission to the educational provider for credits requested, says Mr Jorma Vitkala, Chairman of the GPD Conference. The Conference covers the views of the different target groups and offers a number of different alternatives for architects and structural designers to update their knowledge through building case studies focusing on vital issues such as energy performance, day-lighting, energy saving, structural walls and IG-units and other types of solutions relying on the use of advanced safety glass. The program has also been designed to cover the needs of real-estate owners and maintenance specialists by addressing life-span building economy. The options available for discussions between the various interest groups of the building community makes the GPD a very special and useful conference for architects and structural designers, Vitkala summarizes.
Special focus on complex projects
Special emphasis is also given to dealing with the use of glass in large and demanding construction projects. The timing of deliveries and phasing of glass installations with other key stages of the project are crucial for optimum cost efficiency, smooth installation and avoidance of risks typical for a construction site environment. A special IT-solution developed to assist in designing an optimum process for the handling of architectural glass all the way from processing to on-site installation will be presented by Mr Gert Bischoff of BGT Bischoff Glasstechnik AG. The IT-program has been developed to take the entire logistical delivery chain and its economic consequences into account.
The GPD-program includes factory visits with demonstrations of real-life processing for quality, formal lectures and informal discussions with international specialists from industry, research and suppliers from all over the world. The interaction between participants made possible by the flexible format of the Conference will build a good understanding of what can be effectively supplied by the glass industry today. For professionals of the trade eager to learn about how architects and structural designers secure continuous upgrading of their understanding of the glass business participation in the AIA/CES credited sessions opens up special dimensions. They build a fruitful and common basis for responding to requests about additional information and visions for new project applications raised by architects and designers.
Case studies and poster sessions
The structure of the 9th Glass Processing Days Conference has been adjusted to provide maximum exposure to the practical requirements of the glass business. The proportion of case studies in the program has been clearly expanded for the specific purpose of providing participants with practical experiences and proven solutions that will enhance day-to-day operations. Special attention is paid to quality, logistics, processing and business efficiency. Poster sessions are in progress for the entire duration of the Conference. The special purpose of the poster and exhibition modules is to provide opportunities for the presentation of new innovations and procedures and obtain immediate feedback from the expert audience in attendance.
Special opportunities are also available for presentation in connection with the poster sessions, Vitkala remarks. Outlines for upcoming major projects are sure to attract the attention of specialists attending the conference including representatives for new technologies and processes that await their application in future projects. For architects wishing to open up discussions on the use of new materials and solutions the poster sessions offer an effective gateway into the world of developers and suppliers.
Businesses, products and processes
The Organizing Committee and Session Chairmen have had a tough job in selecting speakers, session chairmen and special addresses from an unusually high class offering, says Jorma Vitkala. We are particularly pleased in offering the opening address by Mr Artur Ulens CEO of Glaverbel, and the contributions provided by Ms Ann Vereecke of the Vlerick Leuven Management School and Mr Nick Limb of the Ducker Research Company, Inc. Ms Vereecke bases her presentation on a current study of the supply chain in the glass industry in comparison with other industries. Mr Nick Limb provides an overview of the Evolution of the Global Architectural Glass market in the time period 1990-2010.
The unique concept of the Glass Processing Days gives participants the benefit of hearing current findings that affect the industry first hand with ample opportunities for follow-up discussions and networking with lecturers and attendants. The highlighting of case studies covering business operations, products and processes is strongly in the focus of the upcoming Conference. Practical experiences illustrate how innovative fine-tuning of the process can bring substantial productivity benefits. A case in point is the presentation by John Gilleeney of AGI who demonstrates the immediate economical and technical benefits that were gained from a new logical approach in the set up of processing tempered laminated glass products. His title is dramatic: How to prevent an Architect´s Dream from becoming a Processors Nightmare.
Effective networking
As usual the Glass Processing Days proceedings will be well documented in written and electronic form and made available at www.glassfiles.com . The special advantage of on-location participants is the opportunity to share experiences and thoughts with leading experts and colleagues on a decision and policy-making level. The timing of the Conference from Friday June 17th to Monday June 20th minimizes the loss of job-time and maximizes the opportunities for interaction between participants at formal as well as informal gatherings. The flexible conference format of the conference with four daily parallel sessions opens opportunities for personal planning of attendance. The chance to learn about new trends of the glass business and at the same time to have the chance to schedule meetings with potential suppliers to new projects makes the GPD an unmatched offer for professionals combining visions with hands-on business sopportunities.
