Glaverbel, a European flat glass leader

The Glaverbel Group is the European branch of the AGC Flat Glass, covering all the flat glass activities of Asahi Glass, the world's largest glassmaking group. It operates in the fields of raw glass (float glass, coated glass, patterned glass, laminated glass and mirrors in large dimensions) and processed glass (glass and mirrors for furnishing and interior decoration, glass for the building industry, fire-resistant glass, and glass for railway carriages and certain other sectors of industry).

Glaverbel, a worldwide reputation based on quality and progress Glaverbel has production sites throughout Europe, from Spain to Russia, with 16 float plants and around 120 production units. Through its international network of agents, the Group has a commercial presence all over the world. Thanks to its policy of sustained research, it is the European leader in advanced glass technologies (coated glass, glass with complex structures, etc.). Currently, Glaverbel employs around 16,300 people.

World leader in coated glass Nearly 40 years of research and pioneering experimentation underpin Glaverbel's leadership in coated glass. Glaverbel has always set itself demanding R&D goals in order to produce the very best coated glazing. Evidence of this can be seen in its range of coated glass products, currently the broadest choice of architectural solutions available on the market.

Coating applications Glass coatings are used extensively. It is no longer restricted to thermal use in buildings; the applications have extended to transportation vehicles (automotive glazings, railway glazings); solar energy capturing systems; appliances (oven doors, freezer front panels) and to display fields.

Coating technologies Several technologies are used to coat glass. The most common methods are either on-line methods, like spray pyrolysis or chemical vapour deposition techniques (CVD); or large area off-line methods, among which the vacuum magnetron sputtering technique is popular. Asahi Glass group believes that these groups are not competing, but complimentary:

- On-line coating process can easily produce large volumes at relatively moderate costs. These are chemically, mechanically and thermally durable and can be toughened to meet the increasing demands for safety and security aspects.

- The off-line sputtering technology is more flexible, both in terms of material choice and multi layer sequences. It provides greater performance and aesthetic options.

Unfortunately, optimised performance can often be reached with less durable materials like silver, and therefore most of these soft coatings are restricted to the use in protective structures, like insulating glass units (IGUs) or laminated glass units. Making a choice between on-line or off-line coating technologies is not a dilemma. To be able to provide coated products for all applications at effective cost, good performance and durability, it is crucial to have alternatives.
