The John Hancock Center
The John Hancock Center, affectionately called "Big John" by Chicago natives, is probably the citizens' favorite skyscraper. This 100-story structure, includes huge X-braces serving both a structural and a visual purpose.
Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the same Chicago company that designed the Sears Tower, the structure was finished in 1969 after four years of construction. The project was controversial from its inception, due especially to its location near much smaller buildings on prestigious North Michigan Avenue. The powerful structure and X bracing can withstand the enormous wind pressures. The tower has over 300,000 square feet of commercial space, eight levels of parking, 25 office floors, and 700 apartments. "Big John" currently stands as the 12th tallest structure in the world, and is in any case the tallest office/residential building.
