The Nationale-Nederlanden Building

The Nationale-Nederlanden Building is located in the historic district of Prague. This curiously-shaped structure was designed by Frank Gehry who was awarded with the 1996 Best Design of the Year by Time magazine.

The Nationale-Nederlanden Building, popularly known as 'Ginger & Fred', was named after dancers Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. This nickname was adopted because it stimulates the visual effect of a dancing couple. 'Fred' is designed as a solid-volume cylindrical tower and like a dancer, seems to be holding tightly "Ginger", the light sinuous glass tower. To complete such a difficult project a lot of engineering work was carried out with the use of sophisticated 3D software. The external layer of 'Ginger' consists of 10mm clear tempered flat glass panes. The internal glazing is insulating glass composed of external 8 mm green tinted panes with a 12 mm air cavity, and an internal 6 mm Low-E clear tempered glass. More information about this 'dancing' structure, built between 1991 and 1995, is available on the selected links.
